Windows 7 is full of features and tools that can make our life easier and eliminates the need of installing many additional software on your PC.Remote Desktop Connection is such a feature on windows 7 which terminates the need of remote desktop control programs.

You can connect and access several windows PC on the same local network and you can also access your home PC from your workspace over the internet by setting up Remote Desktop connection.

I am not discouraging the use of third party software for controlling your PC over the networks. Many of those programs have features that windows itself can not provide.

On this tutorial I will show you exactly how you can set up remote desktop connection on your PC and access all its files, programs and everything through a local network or over the internet. This feature will enable you to use your PC from anywhere like you are sitting in front of it.

Access and use your PC over the internet
Accessing your windows PC over the internet requires configuring your router settings. Follow the steps below to see how you can access your PC through the internet form any other Windows PC.

Step one:From your own PC, go to your router's administration page and forward TCP port 3389 to the computer you want to access.

Step two: Find your computer's public ip address and note it.

Note that, this public IP address could change when you change certain settings or reboot your system. So, use a service like DynDNS to create a domain name to connect your computer without using its own ip address.

Step three: Now you have to enable Remote desktop on your PC. Just follow the steps described on Set up Remote Desktop on your PC section above on this page. And then you will be ready to proceed.

From now on, to access your PC from any Windows PC over the internet follow these steps-
  1. Click on start button. And type remote desktop on the search box.
  2. Now select Remote Desktop Connection under programs.
  3. Now type your routers public IP address or the domain name that you created before on the computer field. And click connect.
  4. Now you can log in to your home PC as you do normally.
After finishing your work, click the start button and click log off.
